Comment From...

Canon Julia Peaty

Once a week my Father would bring home a Friday Treat for each member of the family. For most of the year this would be a bag of sweets each but in Lent we all gave up sweets so instead we would get something different. I’m sure it wasn’t always this but the thing I remember most was a pomegranate. We would cut them in half and eat them with a spoon and feel very exotic. Now I look back and wonder whether we really got the message about abstinence.

Nowadays giving things up has rather gone out of fashion and we are encouraged to take on some extra spiritual discipline for Lent. You may have signed up for a Lent group or plan to attend an extra midweek service. Many of us will try to read a Lent book and we are always offers a wide range at this time of year. I usually read the Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent Book this year it is Abiding by Ben Quash. Whatever you take on or give up; may this Lent be a time of spiritual renew and not just a chance to change to something exotic.

Canon Julia is currently Rural Dean of East Grinstead and will be licensed as Dean of Women's Ministry at Chichester Cathedral on 3rd March at Evensong 3.30pm.
