Comment From...

...The Venerable Roger Combes, Archdeacon of Horsham.

I have just finished reading a book about a country I knew nothing about.  “Yemen  –  Heartbreak and Hope” by Peter Crooks MBE, who has been ministering there on and off  for several years as a chaplain for Mission to Seafarers and Christ Church Aden, and Director of a medical clinic.  The book is beautifully observed and elegantly written. I feel that I am now acquainted. I have encountered some of the poor of Yemen, its refugees, its sick, its historical background, its suffering, its beauty and the love for others given by a whole variety of its people.  I have learnt much about Christian ministry when so much is unpredictable for so many, whether Muslim, Jew, Christian or other.
There are of course many countries that I know nothing about.   That’s my point.  We can easily be insulated from much of God’s world.
The Ascension exalted Christ as Lord over all the world.  Pentecost poured out God’s Spirit for all the world’s peoples and languages. Christian Aid Week is one effort we make for others with whom we share God’s world.
Since Peter and I were curates together years ago, Peter has served across the Middle East. Me? just the South-East of England.
Lord, wherever we are, make us global.
