Comment From...

...Revd Richard Jackon, Mission and Renewal Advisor.

I remember a conversation with a faithful Church goer a few years ago who said to me, “If it could be proved that Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, I wouldn’t lose my faith.” I regret being too polite to say that the Apostle Paul wouldn’t have agreed with them.  Paul’s response would have been, “if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins and those who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all people.” 1 Corinthians 15: 17-19

That seems fairly clear then!  Parts of the scriptures are clearly meant to be taken as poetic and metaphorical, but other parts, notably the Gospel accounts of Jesus life, death and resurrection are not.  The word faith in our culture has come to mean believing something, either without evidence or in spite of the evidence.  Faith in the New Testament means to stake your life on something you believe to be true. The Apostles didn’t go to the stake believing some nonsense about a ‘spiritual resurrection’ or ‘Jesus being raised in their hearts’, whatever on earth that might mean. They did so firm in the faith that Christ had died, Christ is risen and Christ will come again.  We need to recover the confidence to do the same.
