September 2012

Comment from...

Mark Sowerby, Acting Bishop of Chichester

The Interim Report of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s visiting Commissaries has provoked a deal of interest in the media. I am sure that colleagues will share my deep regret that so many who exercise their ministry with professionalism have been let down.

I realise many people want to know how the diocese is responding to the report and its recommendations. We have been responding to some of the recommendations as they emerge already and a full action plan is almost complete and will be presented to diocesan synod in November.

Our new bishop believes considerable progress has been made since the Commissaries began to compile their report.

The bishops are concerned that we should treat the report's recommendations with seriousness and care. We are shaping a programme for the diocesan response to the recommendations, many of which will require considered decisions by diocesan bodies. We hope to address concerns about structures at the November  Diocesan Synod.

A full response will be made to the Commissaries Report after a period of reflection although implementation has already begun. I shall continue to hold responsibility for the day to day business of the Diocese until Bishop Martin takes up his public ministry on November 25th.

With every good wish,
+Mark

Please indicate your interest by emailing Lisa Williamson.
