June 2012

Comment from...

Philip Bourne, Director of Ordinands

At the end of this month, thirty-five men and women will be ordained as deacons and priests. This follows years of discernment and preparation, as each one has faithfully responded to the vocation they have felt from God; thirty-five unique individual people, each with their own story to tell.

SO WHAT? There’s nothing special about that! Every single human being on earth has been created in the image of God and called to respond to God through worship and service. Therefore, to repeat an old phrase, All Are Called. So, with seven billion people in the world, all being called by God, and two billion Christians (not to mention people of other faiths) who have responded to that call, it can hardly be said that God’s call is special… Or can it?

Well, the Bible teaches that God calls individuals to follow and serve God – also that God knows every hair on our head, thus revealing that we are a unique man or woman or child in God’s eyes. As unique individuals it is important to remember that we are called as a person to be in relationship with a particular Person, Jesus Christ, who said, “Come, follow me”.

Within this relationship, active listening and active following enable the discovery of God’s purpose and calling for each one of us. So, as we celebrate with those being ordained, please remember that ordination is nothing special – it’s just one vocation among many. It’s YOU who is special – and God is calling you, too.
