...The Dean of Chichester

Where Christ waits

Every day, candles are lit and requests for prayer are left at the Shrine of St Richard in our Cathedral.  These petitions are a barometer of how people are feeling about the church or the world or their own lives. In recent weeks, many have focused on our Diocese.  This is not surprising, in the light of the Archbishop’s Visitation and the recent vote in the General Synod on the process to enable the consecration of women as bishops in our church.

The difficulty with such usually anonymous prayers is that there is little opportunity to engage with those who have offered them; but when we do meet, I encourage them not to give way to despair, but to have faith in the Lord who knocks on the door of our heart and on the door of our church – a message with a special connotation at Christmas. I sometimes quote words of Bishop George Bell, uttered amidst the wreckage of Europe after the second world war: ‘To despair of being able to do anything, or to refuse to do anything, is to be guilty of infidelity.’

Bishop Martin, whose Enthronement sermon in the Cathedral was full of optimism, has come to Chichester at a very challenging time.  He, and all of us, will surely take heart from these words of Dag Hammarskjöld, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, who died tragically early in 1961: ‘Christ waits for us here, at this very time, at this very place and nowhere else.’

On behalf of all of us at the Cathedral, I wish every reader of the Bulletin a happy Christmas and a peaceful new year, as I go to light a candle for our Bishop, our new Archbishop and for our Diocese, that all of us in these days may be ‘full of grace and truth’.
