Brass Cleaning

posted 16 Dec 2012, 12:52 by Richard Ryder   [ updated 23 Feb 2015, 10:16 ]

•  Have you ever noticed the gleaming brass in St Mary's?
• Did you know there is a happy band of cleaners?
Well, now that you do know, will you join us? We would like to extend the group. Our rota system means you'd be cleaning the brass once in approximately six weeks. It takes about an hour and allows for some quiet contemplation or, if you are really lucky, you may catch Clive practising. If you are interested please ring me on 527902. I look forward to hearing from you.

Chanticleer needs Volunteers

posted 16 Dec 2012, 12:50 by Richard Ryder   [ updated 23 Feb 2015, 10:16 ]

Ten years ago Rosie Hoare and David Parker set up the first 'Chanticleer' group with the aim of taking Christian Assemblies into schools.  There are now two separate groups, one that goes into over 20 primary schools and the other that visits the early years of the secondary sector.  The latter urgently needs new volunteers.  It doesn't take up much time - 6 rehearsals and then approximately 8 performances, all in March - and it is great fun as well as being very worthwhile.
If you are interested in joining and/or would like to know more, please contact Rosie on 01243 781528 or rjfhoare@sky.com

...The Dean of Chichester

Where Christ waits

Every day, candles are lit and requests for prayer are left at the Shrine of St Richard in our Cathedral.  These petitions are a barometer of how people are feeling about the church or the world or their own lives. In recent weeks, many have focused on our Diocese.  This is not surprising, in the light of the Archbishop’s Visitation and the recent vote in the General Synod on the process to enable the consecration of women as bishops in our church.

The difficulty with such usually anonymous prayers is that there is little opportunity to engage with those who have offered them; but when we do meet, I encourage them not to give way to despair, but to have faith in the Lord who knocks on the door of our heart and on the door of our church – a message with a special connotation at Christmas. I sometimes quote words of Bishop George Bell, uttered amidst the wreckage of Europe after the second world war: ‘To despair of being able to do anything, or to refuse to do anything, is to be guilty of infidelity.’

Bishop Martin, whose Enthronement sermon in the Cathedral was full of optimism, has come to Chichester at a very challenging time.  He, and all of us, will surely take heart from these words of Dag Hammarskjöld, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, who died tragically early in 1961: ‘Christ waits for us here, at this very time, at this very place and nowhere else.’

On behalf of all of us at the Cathedral, I wish every reader of the Bulletin a happy Christmas and a peaceful new year, as I go to light a candle for our Bishop, our new Archbishop and for our Diocese, that all of us in these days may be ‘full of grace and truth’.

We will continue to hold all the regular Sunday and Wednesday Services during the interregnum with the exception of Mattins and Evensong. The low turnout for these two services means that we cannot always obtain a person to preside.
If you are missing Evensong, please don’t forget that on the second Sunday of each month Sunday@Six continues in St Nicholas' church.

October 2012

Comment from...

Douglas McKittrick, Archdeacon  of Chichester

Taking Stock
Our Diocese is going through a difficult time at the present. Diocese in Greek means household; we have some household problems, families do. Our present difficulties are being addressed but must be put into perspective. Every day that passes there are wonderful examples of Christian work being carried out across our Diocese where committed Christian people, ordained and lay, witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ giving glory to God. This is what we are about -giving glory to God.

I am writing this on the Feast of St Francis of Assisi and follows from the previous day when Bishop George Bell is commemorated as peacemaker. Two of the great qualities of St Francis which ought to characterise the Church and our Christian life are humility and simplicity. In taking stock we can reflect on those two virtues and also use the prayer of St Francis of Assisi which I think may be a very useful spiritual tool at this time in the life of our Diocese and especially as we prayerfully prepare to welcome our new Bishop.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me so love, where there is injury, pardon, where there is doubt, faith, where there is despair, hope, where there is darkness, light, where there is sadness, joy.
May we through praying this prayer learn how to live closer as partners in the Gospel and together make Jesus better known in our Communities and thereby give glory to God!
With warmest Christian greetings as ever,

A Message from Bishop Martin
Dear Brothers and sisters in Christ
I am immensely grateful to the Dean and Chapter and all the cathedral staff for the time and care that they are putting into preparations for Evensong and enthronement on the Feast of Christ the King.A fact that we cannot alter is the limitation on space in the cathedral.  So in order to complement the formalities of the cathedral event, I am delighted and grateful that it has been possible to plan four welcome services covering different parts of the diocese. I hope that these will be joyful occasions when we can meet to worship, to renew our discipleship of Jesus Christ, and to pray together for the life of our diocese and for our Christian service to the people of Sussex.

I look forward to meeting you at these special services.  If you are unable to be present on any of the occasions listed below, I hope that there will soon be another opportunity for us to meet.

+Martin

September 2012

Comment from...

Mark Sowerby, Acting Bishop of Chichester

The Interim Report of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s visiting Commissaries has provoked a deal of interest in the media. I am sure that colleagues will share my deep regret that so many who exercise their ministry with professionalism have been let down.

I realise many people want to know how the diocese is responding to the report and its recommendations. We have been responding to some of the recommendations as they emerge already and a full action plan is almost complete and will be presented to diocesan synod in November.

Our new bishop believes considerable progress has been made since the Commissaries began to compile their report.

The bishops are concerned that we should treat the report's recommendations with seriousness and care. We are shaping a programme for the diocesan response to the recommendations, many of which will require considered decisions by diocesan bodies. We hope to address concerns about structures at the November  Diocesan Synod.

A full response will be made to the Commissaries Report after a period of reflection although implementation has already begun. I shall continue to hold responsibility for the day to day business of the Diocese until Bishop Martin takes up his public ministry on November 25th.

With every good wish,
+Mark
