Nicholas Frayling, Dean of Chichester Cathedral

‘Summertime and the living is easy’ goes the old song. Well, not at the Cathedral it isn’t! June and July are pretty hectic at the best of times, but this year has seen the biennial Festival of Flowers, including a Royal visit; the formal ceremony of ‘Election’ by the College of Canons of Bishop Martin Warner; the packed ‘moving on’ services for children in Church Schools in the Diocese; two Ordinations on consecutive days, followed without a break by Chichester Festivities – the well-known annual arts festival, at the heart of which are eight major concerts in the Cathedral, this year augmented by a magnificent open-air exhibition of sculpture by Philip Jackson.

The Head Verger and his team have coped with all this splendidly (‘All in a day’s work!’)  as have our volunteers of all ages and descriptions. Chichester is a very busy Cathedral, and that produces its own challenges, but ‘the daily round, the common task’ of worship, prayer and hospitality, go on unabated. It is always a joy to welcome representatives from the parishes, who come on the day when the Diocese is remembering their parish in prayer – especially when they have made the long journey from ‘the far east’ to be with us.

At the end of their annual Festivities Concert, our Choir, in the darkened Cathedral, sang the well-loved hymn, The day Thou gavest, Lord is ended. It was so important to be reminded that ‘the voice of prayer is never silent, nor dies the strain of praise away.’

That is why your Cathedral is here. Please pray for us, as we do, every day, for you.
